EDUCATION / SUPPORT GROUPS
Community health promotion and education needs are met though screenings, education classes, CPR classes, support groups, and the Diabetic Self-Management Education Program. The Education/Wellness Department coordinates area-wide programming and screenings. Staff work with individuals and organizations upon request. Support groups: Burgess has an active diabetic support group. The Diabetic support group is facilitated by Michele Kirkendall, RD, LD and Sue Mc Laughlin, RN. This group meets the first Thursday of every month.
Burgess Diabetic Self Management Education: This program consists of group classes offering a team approach to managing your diabetes.. Along with your health care provider, the staff will help develop a personalized diabetes plan. It includes:
- Information on types of diabetes
- Checking blood sugar
- Nutrition and meal planning
- Information on low and high blood sugar
- Exercise and diabetes
- Diabetic medications
- Stress management
- Community support
- Preventing long term problems
The program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association and State certified. The sessions are covered by most insurance companies. For information please call the Diabetic Educators at 423-9268.
Community CPR classes are held on an as needed basis. Please call the Education Department at 423-9364 for more information.
Prepared Childbirth Classes: These classes are offered to expectant moms and their support coaches and review pregnancy stages, labor and delivery, post-partum care for the mom and care of the newborn. Classes are offered every other month throughout the year. Classes meet one time from 6:30 – 9 p.m. in the BHC Conference Rooms. There is no cost for the class or materials. Pre-registration is required as class sizes are limited. Please call the Education Department at 423-9354 to pre-register.
Screenings: The Wellness Department offers a general lab screening panel every Spring and Fall for a reduce charge. This panel of 25 tests includes glucose, cholesterol, liver function and blood counts. For an additional charge, males may have a PSA (prostatic screening antigen) done.
Every February lipid profiles (cholesterol along with the "good" HDL and "bad" LDL ) are offered at a reduced charge.
Flu Vaccine: The Wellness department works with area employers to provide flu vaccine to their employees. The Home Health Department offers flu vaccine clinics during the late fall to the community.
