Press Release
Thanksgiving Community Dinner to be Held November 24
Need a family to share dinner with on Thanksgiving Day? Join ours! A traditional Thanksgiving dinner will be served to area residents to make sure no one misses out on this customary feast because they are alone or unable to prepare a meal.
The Thanksgiving Community Dinner will be held on the national holiday Thursday, Nov. 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Turkey, stuffing, salads, vegetable dishes, other sides and pies will be served.
The annual dinner attracts dozens of adults, senior citizens and families. The meal is served in the community center at 320 10th Street. Free will donations are accepted.
"Nancy Broer wanted to do something for the community and help people who are alone or in need to enjoy a traditional dinner in a family atmosphere on the exact holiday,” says Nancy’s niece, Teresa Butler. “Burgess People Care will continue to fulfill her dream that everyone have a place to go for Thanksgiving."
Burgess People Care is a long-time employee committee of Burgess Health Center that raises funds to support community drives, events and fellow employees. The committee wants to thank the following for support of this event: the Broer family for the memorial gift in honor of Nancy, Onawa Chamber of Commerce, Onawa Democrat, Onawa Sentinel, and the Grapevine (Ryan Publishing).
Persons experienced with cooking for crowds will prepare the main course. Burgess volunteers, husbands and wives, in-laws and other family members will prepare special dishes. Among the volunteers giving of their time to serve those in attendance on Thanksgiving Day will be the family and friends of Nancy.
People who wish to attend should make a meal reservation by Friday, Nov. 18 to ensure there is more than enough food. Call Shirley at 423-9374.
