Arney is Volunteer of the Year for Burgess
Mary Arney was named Volunteer of the Year for Burgess Health Center and was recently honored at the statewide hospital Auxiliary fall meeting.
Mary has volunteered at Burgess for the past 10 years and volunteers three days a week as the greeter desk at the main entrance, surgery desk and the hospital auxiliary’s gift shop.
‘Mary is one of those special volunteers that will substitute at any time there is a need,” says Jean Pekarek. “Mary is also an active member of the Auxiliary Board and serves on the hospitality committee.”
When Burgess opened in 1963, Arney joined Burgess as a registered nurse. She retired as the director of nursing in 1981.
Burgess volunteers work in 13 areas of the hospital and hail from 12 communities: Blencoe, Castana, Decatur, Hornick, Moorhead, Onawa, Otto, Rodney, Sloan, Turin, Ute and Whiting.
In 2008, 87 volunteers donated more than 10,000 hours to the hospital.
