Breast Cancer Specialist to Speak to Local Healthcare Professionals

Dr Shawna Willey, Whiting native and surgeon at the Lombardi Cancer Center of Georgetown University, will present the continuing ed program, "Think Pink: The Latest on Breast Cancer," Friday, Sept. 11, at 7-10 a.m. at the Onawa Community Center in Onawa.
The program for physicians, nurses and other healthcare providers will be free and include a complimentary breakfast. Persons should begin check in at 6: 30 a.m.

She will address pros and cons of partial breast irradiation, how sentinel node analysis affects treatment decisions, types of breast reconstruction and more.

While in the area, she will also present a free program "Wear Pink: The Latest on Breast Cancer" Sept. 10 to the general public at 7:30 p.m. at the Onawa Community Center.

Willey credits Dr. John Garred, Sr. for inspiring her to pursue her medical career in surgery.

She is the immediate past-president of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, serves as director of the Betty Lou Ourisman Breast Health Center at Georgetown University and is an assistant professor in the department of surgery there.

Before joining Lombardi, Willey directed the breast program at George Washington University Medical Center where she completed her residency in surgery. She received her M.D. from the University of Iowa.

Willey spent 10 years in the private practice of general surgery before focusing her practice to the surgical treatment of breast disease. Today she has a full clinical practice and participates in national clinical trials as well as on-going trials at the Lombardi Cancer Center.
