New Ambulance and Hydraulic Ambulance Cot Arrives

A new ambulance and new hydraulic patient cot have arrived and are now being used at Burgess Health Center when its emergency crews transport patients.

The ambulance features a CPR seat and a bench to accommodate staff inside for patient transfers to larger health facilities. It is part of Burgess’ three-vehicle fleet. Rescue crews made nearly 420 ambulance runs in 2008.

There are 18 persons who work in different shifts around the clock to handle emergencies and patient transfers, says Kris Petersen, and R.N. and director of emergency services and critical care. The crew includes nine paramedics, including two that earned special certification in critical care. Other crew members hold EMT-I, EMT-B or RN designations. Continuing education courses keep all members updated on trauma care, emergency cardiac and other emergency care topics.

“When we arrive on the scene people can feel secure about our crew’s advanced training in making transfers or in treating patients in that first critical hour of an emergency,” Petersen says.

The hydraulic cot raises and lowers a patient with the touch of a button to reduce strenuous lifting and the risk of back injuries. It was purchased through a "special intention ask" at the Burgess Poinsettia Ball which raised $9,050.

Ball guests were invited to purchase band-aid dispensers which generated $4,525 at the ball. Derek and Sarah Cartmill made a donation and the Burgess Auxiliary donated matching funds.

“We are always pleased to announce news to the community of a special purchase that shows how we invest our donations,” says Shirley Bruegger, foundation director. “The cot is another example of how generous donors continually help Burgess to advance healthcare for the region.”
