New Orthopedic Surgeon Joins Burgess Med Staff

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Duane K. Nelson will now offer orthopedic surgery and a weekly outpatient clinic at Burgess Health Center and will see patients each Friday beginning July 25.

He replaces Dr. Mark Wheeler of CNOS who has retired.

Nelson plans to perform a full range of surgery at Burgess, including arthroscopic and total knee and hip replacement surgery, according to Fran Tramp, hospital president.

“Offering more orthopedic surgery will be a wonderful addition to the services available at Burgess,” Tramp says. “Dr. Nelson comes very highly recommended and I believe the patients will have an exceptional experience.”

The new surgery suites at Burgess, completed as part of the hospital's renovation project, are better geared for more complex surgeries such as orthopedic procedures, Tramp adds. The expanded suites feature improved lighting, more storage and floor space and anesthesia and laparoscopic equipment suspended from the ceiling -- making room for extra technology and devices used in today's surgeries.

Nelson practices with Tri-State Orthopaedics, based in Sioux City, and has more than 20 years of orthopaedic experience in Siouxland in Sioux City. He previously practiced with Mid-America Orthopedics in Wichita, Kan., and was a partner in Northwest Iowa Orthopedics and owner of Nelson Orthopedics.

Nelson earned his medical degree at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine where he did his surgical internship. He completed his residency in orthopedics at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. He is a fellow with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Advancements in orthopedic surgery continue to grow, says Anita Madsen, director of surgery, which has earned top ratings in hospital patient satisfaction surveys.

"We're excited to welcome Dr. Nelson to Burgess," Madsen says. “New models of prosthetic knees and hip joints, advanced imaging and post surgical treatment have all helped more and more patients recover quickly from orthopedic surgery today.

“We provide an ideal choice for surgery in Onawa, Madsen adds. “We offer advanced technology, surgical specialists, family physicians for follow-up, an excellent physical therapy department and a beautiful hospital setting. We're familiar with a lot of people which makes them extra comfortable with our care.”

Persons who need orthopedic care should obtain a referral from their family provider to make an appointment with Dr. Nelson.
