Burgess Hospice Welcomes New Volunteers

Burgess Home Health/ Hospice has welcomed four new individuals to its team of Hospice volunteers to provide caring support to patients.

The four persons who have completed 15 hours of training to volunteer are Lynne Deen, Whiting; Michelle Kuhlman, Onawa; Linda McDonald, Oto; Fran Tramp, Blencoe. They make up a team of nearly two dozen volunteers that provide support to hospice patients and their families in their homes, the hospital or nursing home.

This past fiscal year Burgess Hospice volunteers gave over 938 hours of their time to patients.

“Our Hospice program in Onawa meets the needs of patients and families faced with a life-limiting illness,” says Annette Linden, Burgess Hospice social worker and volunteer coordinator. “Our trained volunteers are a vital part of our service to help each patient live as comfortably and fully as possible.”

Volunteers are trained to listen, visit and provide practical help which can include making phone calls, providing transportation, handling errands or staying with or taking patients on a drive.

Persons interested in learning Hospice volunteering should call Linden or Sherri Johnston at Burgess at 423-9265.
