Burgess Health Center Offers Health Smart Kids to Boyer Valley Students
Boyer Valley School second and fourth graders received a special grade for their health this fall from Burgess Health Center as part of its Health Smart Kids program, an interactive five-week school program that educates students on healthy living habits.
Health Smart Kids features guest speakers on four topics and asks them to keep score of their daily health habits for each topic -- healthy eating, exercise, rest and creative activities in place of television and computer time.
Students received final scores for their efforts and took part in a final high energy-session to reinforce all the lessons. Students with the highest scores for health efforts merit special awards.
Burgess health professionals involved in Health Smart Kids are Ann Phillips and Michelle Kirkendall, registered dietitians, and Claudia Boss and Kate Garred, nurse educators.
“It’s a fun program that gets kids actively involved with tips and scores sheets that will help them take healthy living practices seriously,” says Claudia Boss, Burgess nurse educator. “Statistics show that many health problems today have been created by people’s living habits. We encouraged Boyer Valley students to share their health enthusiasm with their families to help everyone live healthier.”
