Sloan Resident Honored for Hospice Volunteer Work

Romalee Nelson of Sloan was recently honored by Burgess Hospice at the Iowa Hospice Organization annual conference for her time and dedication to support Hospice patients.

At the annual conference, held in Ames, volunteers from hospice agencies across the state were honored for their time and contributions.

“Romalee is a very special volunteer and invaluable to our program,” says Annette Linden, volunteer coordinator. “Her expertise is end-of-life care, where she unselfishly devotes many hours to patients and their families. During last Christmas season, Romalee was an integral part of our team in providing service to a patient whose family was unavailable. She provided hours of care, advocated for her patient’s needs, and created an atmosphere of calmness and serenity, which helped control the patient’s pain.

“Romalee has a special gift of communication with our patients and families,” adds Linden. “We are fortunate to have her on our team.”

Burgess Hospice has 23 volunteers who completed more than 1,215 hours of service this past fiscal year, with 1,021 hours devoted to direct patient care. The Burgess volunteers are part of an army of more than 3,700 active hospice volunteers in the state of Iowa who help patients and family members with care at the end of life.
