Burgess Hosts Fall Health Festival Oct. 23
A Fall Health Festival - offering flu shots, blood pressure and diabetes checks, a Medicare prescription drug update and mini-education sessions - will be held Monday, Oct. 23 from 1 to 7 p.m. at the B&B Party Room.
The event, hosted by Burgess Home Health and Hospice, is free and open to the public. Its Halloween and fall theme will include door prizes, favors and light refreshments served by the Burgess Auxiliary, co-sponsor of the event.
The event begins with a one-hour update on the new Medicare prescription drug benefit by Kris Thompson, senior health advocate of the Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) of the State of Iowa. Thompson returns to speak in Onawa after addressing a packed house of area seniors last year on the new Medicare Part D benefit that went info effect Jan. 1.
There will be mini-sessions on nine other health topics such as Medicare coverage for screenings, planning for bird flu, diabetes, stress reduction, Five Wishes, home health services and more. Sessions will be led by Burgess Health Center health professionals.
“This fall event is a first for Burgess,” says organizer Sherri Johnston, director of Burgess Home Health and Hospice. “We wanted to offer a strong kick-off for our flu and pneumonia clinics, stress the importance of immunizations, and provide updates on health information that people hear about in the news. This will be a fun and casual event where people can drop in, receive their vaccinations and obtain some extra education they can use to live healthier.”
Johnston said that public response to the Burgess seminar last fall on the new Medicare prescription benefit program was so strong Burgess wanted to give seniors another forum to allow them to ask questions on the new drug benefit plan and other health related topics.
