Baby Images Wow Onawa’s New Parents

Expectant mothers can watch their unborn babies move, yawn and open their eyes with amazing new 4-D ultrasound technology which recently arrived at Burgess Health Center in Onawa.

New high-quality ultrasound allows expectant parents to see 4-D images of their unborn infants in the womb, while giving physicians important information on baby’s development.

“The new Phillips HD11 ultrasound gives our expectant parents the most detailed first glimpse possible of their babies,” says Jenny Coble, director of radiology. “It produces keepsake pictures with facial features.”

The system is used in the third trimester of pregnancy, says Burgess radiologist Dr. John Terry.
“A 4D ultrasound exam allows physicians to visualize facial anatomy and newborns moving in real-time,” he says. “We can determine fetal age, help evaluate high-risk pregnancies and detect possible abnormalities.”

Some parents-to-be also hope the images can help them determine if the baby is a boy or girl, but predictions are not always reliable, Coble cautions. Reactions from pregnant mothers to the ultrasound images has been very positive.

“Our expectant parents can enjoy and benefit from high-tech imaging right here in Onawa,” says Coble. “Our new 4-D ultrasound is a wonderful complement to our new Family Beginnings patient suites at Burgess in our new $5 million patient addition.”

The new ultrasound unit can also benefit patients in surgery as well as Radiology. Burgess also continues to use a traditional ultrasound unit for patient exams.

“It’s another example of the advanced imaging technology in Radiology that Burgess has acquired to better serve patients and physicians,” says Terry. “Persons coming to Burgess for health care can be reassured we offer state-of-the-art imaging to diagnose and monitor our patients.”
