Burgess Auxiliary Donates Scooter to Help Visitors

Visitors who need help getting around at Burgess Health Center can now use a new scooter purchased and donated to the hospital by the Auxiliary.

Similar to scooters available at large retail stores, the “Pride Mobility Maxima” model is easy to operate, according to Gloria Hausman, Burgess auxiliary chair. It features an extra carrier on the back for storage of canes and walkers and a basket on the front large enough to carry an oxygen tank.

“We’ve been discussing buying the scooter and decided to go ahead to help persons reach the hospital’s new patient area more easily,” says Hausman. “Scooters can help persons with arthritis, back problems and other health challenges that make walking difficult. It’s ideal for people who use a walker or a cane.”

The scooter is plugged in the hall by the vending machine at the Burgess front desk and must be checked out for use. Persons have been using the scooter since it arrived this spring.

“We appreciate this recent addition to help us further enhance our customer service at Burgess,” says Sandy Leggett, Burgess chief operating officer. “As a nurse I know it’s important to meet the needs of families and visitors as well as our patients. Thanks to the generosity of our Auxiliary we have taken another new step to provide helpful support to persons who come through our doors.”

The Burgess Auxiliary enjoys knowing it makes a difference, says Hausman. In past years Auxiliary funds have also helped buy new ophthalmology equipment, patient controlled pain management new patient beds, a patient lift and scale and other hospital equipment.
