Burgess Completes Successful 2005

The 2005 year that just ended was a successful year for Burgess Health Center, its clinics, pharmacies and Health Foundation, according to hospital president Fran Tramp. In a recent letter sent to employees and supporters he cited a number of achievements which include:

The hospital’s patient satisfaction scores show higher marks of satisfaction from patients. Over 90 % of patients marked “good or very good” for their service at Burgess, while the emergency room recorded a whopping percentile ranking of 96%.

Construction of the hospital addition is on schedule for substantial completion in mid-February to be open for patients in March.

Burgess obtained the “Second Look” mammography system which gives Dr. John Terry a sophisticated second review of subtle variations in breast tissue through a new computerized screening system.

Burgess completed its first full year of patient sleep studies which helped a number of persons needing the specialized diagnostic help of a sleep disorder.

The Emergency Department added a newer ambulance to its fleet with a CPR seat and more space for emergency health care personnel to maneuver. An older, but functional rig went to the Decatur rescue squad.

Burgess personnel stepped up to meet patients needs. Joyce Cornwell, nurse practitioner at the Burgess Family Clinic-Decatur, now sees patients at the Burgess Family Clinics in Sloan and Dunlap along with Dr. Ashraf Gerges. Dr. Deborah Herman completed her first full year of practice with the Family Medicine Clinic in Onawa. Sandy Leggett was named chief operating officer and other employees have moved into new positions to further improve services for patients and their families.

The annual golf tournament and Poinsettia Ball again raised funds for Burgess, while providing residents with events for fun and friendship.

The Burgess AuxiliaryACT II consignment shop received a facelift and new signage. The shop raises funds for the Auxiliary which then helps Burgess purchase needed equipment and technology to benefit patient care.

The Burgess People Care hospital organization again reached out to the community by adopting families for the holidays and contributing to area organizations.

Burgess’ classification as a Critical Access Hospital has enhanced its finances through enhanced Medicare reimbursement and reduced operating costs which further strengthens its ability to meet community healthcare needs.

“We have an excellent medical staff and employees who work hard to provide quality care and treatment to our patients and their families,” says Tramp. “I am thankful for their dedication, extra hours and increased effort to care for our patients and one another. We deeply appreciate our donors, businesses, volunteers and community friends who support us. The 2006 year promises to be more exciting yet with the opening of our hospital addition and other exciting developments.”
