Ball Funds Benefit Burgess Patients

The 21st annual Poinsettia Ball held 10 days ago raised nearly $22,000 for Burgess Health Center, including 12,000 from its live and silent auctions.

“I’m really happy with the proceeds of our ball,” says Sue Burtch, ball chairperson.
“I am so grateful for the auction gift donors, our generous sponsors, dedicated volunteers, and everyone who came and enjoyed the ball. We work hard to make it a beautiful and enjoyable evening.”

The following served as sponsors in several categories: Diamond: Dr Peter Daher and Burgess Medical Staff, Platinum: Meyer Carlisle Leapley Construction; Gold: Family Medicine Clinic, Suter Services; Silver: Dr John Terry, Elmwood Care Center, HDR Architecture, Inc., Hoffman Insurance Agency, Inc., MH Healthsearch and Onawa Super 8.

Bronze sponsors were: Baird Holm, Blencoe State Bank, CNOS, PC, Family Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic PC, First Federal Bank, First State Bank of Mapleton, Hawkeye Adjustment Services, Quorem Health Resources, ServiShare, Shared Service Systems, Siouxland Mechanical Contracting, Sloan State Bank, US Bank and Western Iowa Co-op.

The Burgess Foundation will use the proceeds again to benefit patient care at Burgess.
The hospital is using the proceeds to help fund two new medication dispensing units which works like an ATM for drugs.

"Using an Omnicell unit, the nurse goes to the cabinet, identifies a particular patient, and is presented with a list of medications ordered by the patient’s physician and approved by the hospital pharmacist,” says Sandy Leggett, chief operating officer at Burgess. “The nurse can only access those medications for which there is a medication order, helping ensure the patient gets the right medication."

The Omnicell dispensing units increase patient safety by minimizing the opportunity for human error, enhance nursing and pharmacy efficiency, and give nurse more time for patients at the bedside.
