Burgess Addresses How to Cope with Loss during Holidays
Holidays can be a difficult time for people and families who have lost a loved one, according to Annette Linden, bereavement coordinator of Burgess Hospice. She offers these suggestions to help persons copying with grief better manage the holidays:
Ideas for Holiday Celebrations
- Go to a movie or bring one in.
- Invite someone new to your celebration or a group of people.
- Join another family’s festivities. Consider accepting all activities, even for a short time.
- Light a special candle in celebration of the love and life you shared.
- Buy a gift for your deceased loved one. Give it to someone who would otherwise not have a gift. When you share love, it grows.
- Write down thoughts of a gift your loved one gave to you such as courage, laughter, love or a special memory. Make a special time to sit down and read these thoughts. Share them with family or and place it into a stocking or gift box. Decorate the tree with them.
- Place a wreath on the grave.
- Embrace your memories: Ask for pictures, stories and mementos of your loved one.
- Make a memory box for your mementos and include poems or stories people have shared.
- Consider keeping a table setting at the table and leave a flower or an empty glass to symbolize the presence in spirit of the person who died.
- Plan a toast or a prayer. This can be elaborate or a simple moment of silence.
- Hang a special ornament, play a favorite song, or serve a favorite food of your loved one.
- Skip the cards if you aren’t up to it or send a printed holiday letter.
- Purchase a poinsettia as a living memorial to your loved one.
- Make a quilt or have one made from clothing of your loved one.
